About
Drawing on musical
traditions from the Mississippi Delta to the West Texas hill country, Dogtooth
Canyon performs both original and classic acoustic blues and folk
music. A collaboration between Matt Meighan on vocals and guitar and Shawn
Cupolo on guitar, the duo is based out of Boulder, Colorado.
Matt Meighan performs throughout Colorado as a solo
singer/songwriter/guitarist. Matt
first began performing in Chicago in 1968, and has since traveled the world
with his music. He’s played on the
street corners of New York City, Melbourne, Australia, and Venice, Italy, and
has regularly brought his songs to the pubs of Ireland over the past ten
years. Locally, Matt has performed
at Penny Lane, Jamestown Mercantile, Cannon Mine Cafe, and many other acoustic
venues.
Matt's musical
influences include Lightnin' Hopkins, Mississippi John Hurt, Utah Phillips,
Steve Earle, and Lucinda Williams. This
blend of inspirations results in stirring original songs as well as soulful
renditions of songs by his musical heroes.
Local music favorite Danny Shafer (All-Night Honky Tonk All-Stars,
Danny Shafer Band) says, “Matt plays exactly the kind of
music I like to listen to - one of the most honest voices in folk music.”
In addition to playing
in Dogtooth Canyon, Shawn Cupolo is a member of the blues-rock
band Hotfoot, and has performed at The Fox Theatre, Herman’s Hideaway,
Cricket on the Hill, Boulder County Fairgrounds Arena, The Foundry, The Mercury
Café, and Penny Lane, among other venues.
Working with a variety of bands and musical projects in Colorado over
the past 5 years, he has opened for Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder
and has been featured in live performance on radio shows at KGNU and Clear
Creek Radio.
Originally from the East
Coast, Cupolo played in blues, jazz and rock bands in the New York City metro
area for over ten years. As a member of
various New Jersey-based bands, Cupolo has been featured on the Blues In The
Night television program in New York City, and radio shows on WDHA (NJ’s
largest rock station) and WNTI (Northwest NJ Free-Form Radio). He also appeared on a compilation album (WNTI
40th Anniversary) that included former Saturday Night Live
band leader G.E. Smith.
“I’ve always been drawn
to music that requires you to bare your soul in order to do it right,” says
Cupolo. “Music should represent a movement of energy both among musicians and
between performers and audience.”
